The Libertarian Party of Ohio embraces the principles and tenets of libertarian thought: individual rights and the freedom to exercise them, confidence in free markets, private property rights, and tolerance for other cultures and ideals. At heart, Ohio Libertarians espouse personal responsibility in social interaction, because responsibility is an essential component of liberty. Our common goal is to defend individuals’ primary rights to life, liberty, and property. All people have the right to the pursuit of happiness as long as their actions do not infringe on these primary rights of others. As a State Affiliate, our platform focuses on state-centric issues. We defer positions of national interest to the National Party and incorporate herein their Platform, Preamble, and Statement of Principles. We defer to our candidates the responsibility of defining specific solutions to local and regional issues within the parameters of our stated principles.

Author: Josh Umbaugh

Josh Umbaugh grew up in a small Midwestern town, the kind with one stoplight and cornfields stretching in every direction. Those early years taught him the value of hard work, honesty, and looking out for your neighbors. It was a close-knit community where people helped each other, and that spirit of connection has guided Josh ever since. After earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts, Josh married his wife and began a busy new chapter, moving nine times in ten years before finally putting down roots in Miamisburg. They’ve now called it home for more than a decade, raising their daughter and becoming deeply involved in the local community. Over the years, Josh has served in many ways. He’s been a member of his church council, stewardship committee, and choir. He’s volunteered with the local recreational soccer league as both a board member and coach. He’s now in his second term on the Citizens Urban Forestry Advisory Board (CUFAB), where he helps maintain and improve Miamisburg’s urban tree canopy. Through these roles, Josh has seen firsthand how collaboration, listening, and empathy can make communities stronger. Becoming a father gave Josh a new perspective on the future and on leadership. Watching his daughter grow up, he couldn’t help but compare her experiences to his own childhood before 9/11: a time when neighbors knew each other, kids played outside freely, and community felt closer. Today, he sees a different landscape, one where fear, division, and political games often drown out compassion and common sense. “I love my neighbors and my community,” Josh says. “I want to help facilitate the best outcomes possible. We need leadership that shows grace and empathy, not political games. That’s what I hope to bring moving forward.” That belief is what led Josh to run for State Representative. He’s seen how disconnected politics has become from real life and wants to help restore a sense of trust and belonging in Ohio’s communities. For Josh, public service isn’t about power or partisanship; it’s about people. It’s about building a future where his daughter, and every child in Ohio, can grow up in a community that’s safe, kind, and free.
